Welcome To
Chatzakis Winery
After several years of work and experience, it's time to follow our own path. Thus, in 2011, oenologist Nikos Chatzakis created Chatzakis Winery, aiming to produce wines that reflect their place of origin, respecting nature and the authenticity of their character. These are wines that manage to highlight the different soils where the vineyards are planted, their altitudes and slopes, in some cases the vines’ youth and in others their old age.
Our desire is to create unique wines, with clear differences and similarities, with distinct characteristics of local varieties, resistant to the passage of time. During these years we have developed a special relationship with the old vines, we have collaborated with local winegrowers and, at the same time, we have been planting our own vineyards, which we have been cultivating with care and patience.
At the winery we respect the individuality of the grape; our wines, just like the vines, have their own character, personality and peculiarities, they are subtle and fine, tasteful and elegant, with depth and complexity. Our inexhaustible creativity and willingness to experiment offer us new taste experiences every now and then, with stable qualities but also one-off bottlings.
Our Wines
Our Location
The northern part of Syros, Apano Meria area, is one of the oldest vineyards in Europe and has a long tradition in local winemaking. For centuries, the people of Syros has been terrace farming, to cultivate the vines that have been growing on the island’s barren lands, to produce their homemade wines. The winery is located at the top of a hill, in front of the Catholic chapel of Saint Benedict, in the north of the island, in a typical Aegean barren landscape, bathed in sunlight, strewn with stones and full of bushes and figs, where only the sound of the wind, cicadas, blue-jays, black eared wheatears, partridges and larks can be heard. From up there, the view of the surrounding Cyclades is breathtaking. To the west you can almost reach out and catch Gyaros, Kea and Kythnos islands, while to the east you can even see the houses of Andros, Tinos and Mykonos.
The settlement of San Michalis, at the heart of which is the homonymous church, and the wider area of Apano Meria offer a wealth of unexplored archaeological sites, with remains that testify to the rich prehistory of the island, which begins with the beginning of the Proto-Cycladic civilization (Kastri-Chalandriani, Delfinonisi – 3000 BC). Kastri, Chalandriani, Grammata, Spilia Ferekydis and Delfinonisi are some of the proclaimed archaeological sites of the area. The paths that cross the area from coast to coast hold many small surprises. On the western side of the winery, going down towards the coast, one can explore the small, secluded beaches of the area such as Marmari, Gria Spilia (tou Americanou), Grammata, Lia and Mega Lakko − small retreats suitable for swimming and resting − which are only accessible on foot.
